Group discussed Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, changes at NSS Headquarters, upcoming HAL5
and NSS events, and the future of Project HALO.

HAL5 free public lecture on "Integrated Architectures for Human Space Exploration" with
guest speaker Mr. Gordon R. Woodcock, distinguished space engineer, former President of
the old L5 Society, and former NSS Executive Vice-President.

HAL5 free public lecture on "SpaceShipOne: Huntsville's Connection to First Private Manned
Space Program" with guest speaker Mr. Timothy L. Pickens, Propulsion System Developer for
Scaled Composites. Greg and Ronnie attend the 2003 ISDC in San Jose, California. Ronnie
and Greg participated in a half-day NSS Strategic Planning Workshop and meetings of NSS
Committees.

HAL5 free public lecture on "Advanced In-Space Propulsion for Exploring the Solar System"
with guest speaker Mr. Les Johnson, Manager for NASA In-Space Propulsion Technology
Projects.

July 2003
HAL5 "Elections and Pizza Party" meeting. Had about 10 attendees due to need to move
meeting night away from Independence Day holiday. In addition to electing new officers,
group discussed upcoming HAL5 and NSS events, and the Ground Launch 2 (GL-2) "tube-launch"
mission for Project HALO.
Second technical meeting for the HALO Ground Launch 2 (GL-2) "tube-launch" mission.
Tim and Steve brought the team up to speed on the overall mission approach, latest hardware
designs, and operations concepts. Group discussed work to be done in the near future.

August 2003
HAL5 members meeting. Group discussed upcoming HAL5 and NSS
events, and HALO GL-2. Group also discussed the possibility of hosting the annual meeting
of the NSS Executive Committee (or Board of Directors) at a major event in December. HAL5
would pay to fly Executive Director Brian Chase down to Huntsville to speak to the general
public about NSS. Members expressed interest in adding a speaker track (or two) and a
HALO workshop.

HAL5 program night. Group watched DVD of special British documentaries on space exploration.

HAL5 free public lecture on "The XB-70 Valkyrie: Can a Cold-War Era Supersonic Bomber
Serve as a Space Launch Platform?" with guest speaker Mr. Benjamin Donahue, 3rd Generation
Space Technology Task Lead for Boeing. Had a decent crowd of about 20 attendees.

HAL5 members meeting. Group viewed the new PBS TV series
video that features NSS and Project HALO, as well as a video recording of recent testimony
to Congress by space activists Bob Zubrin (Mars Society President) and Rick Tumlinson
(Space Frontier Foundation President). Group also discussed the upcoming NSS Executive
Committee meeting and the possibility (now getting smaller) of holding it in Huntsville.
