• From places along the Atlantic coast (VA to SC)
  1. If north, take US 17 south to site in Hampstead (30 mi south of Jacksonville, NC)
  2. or Take US highway 17 south to Wilmington (see Map)
  3. If south, take US highway 17 north to Wilmington
  4. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17
  
  
• From the Northeast coastal regions (ME to NC)
  1. Take Interstate 95 south through most of North Carolina
  2. Take I-95 Exit 85(?) onto Interstate 40 heading southeast (see Map)
  3. Take I-40 to Wilmington where it exits onto Market Street (US 17)
  4. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17
  5. Or, take Exit 408 off of I-40 onto SR 210 eastbound to Hampstead, NC
  
  
• From the Southeast coastal regions (FL to SC)
  1. Take Interstate 95 north to 14 miles past the North/South Carolina border
  2. Take I-95 Exit 14 onto US highway 74 east (see Map)
  3. Follow US 74 east past Whiteville to Wilmington where it meets US 17
  4. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17
  
  
• From the Gulf coastal regions (FL to TX)
  1. Take Interstates 55, 59, or 65 north to intersection with Interstate 20
  2. Take Interstate 20 east to intersection with Interstate 95 in South Carolina
  3. Take Interstate 95 north to 14 miles past the North/South Carolina border
  4. Take I-95 Exit 14 onto US highway 74 east (see Map)
  5. Follow US 74 east past Whiteville to Wilmington where it meets US 17
  6. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17

  1. Take Interstates 55, 65, 75, or 85 north to intersection with Interstate 40
  2. Take Interstate 40 east past I-95 in North Carolina (see Map)
  3. Continue on east I-40 to Wilmington where it exits onto Market Street (US 17)
  4. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17

  1. Take Interstates 79, 77, 75, or 65 south to intersection with Interstate 40
  2. Take Interstate 40 east past I-95 in North Carolina (see Map)
  3. Continue on east I-40 to Wilmington where it exits onto Market Street (US 17)
  4. Balloon Launch Site is 20 miles north of Wilmington on US 17

  • From intersection of US 74 and US 17 (see Map)
    1. Travel east on US 17 (it becomes Market St) thru downtown Wilmington
    2. Continue east to between 3000 and 5100 Market Street
  • From intersection of I-40 and US 17 (see Map)
    1. Take a right onto US 17 (aka. Market St) towards downtown Wilmington
    2. Hotel Row is between I-40 and 3000 Market Street

  • From intersection of US 74 and US 17 (see Map)
    1. Travel east on US 17 (it becomes Market St) to the I-40 Intersection
    2. Take right to Shoney's at 149 College Road (near Comfort Inn)
  • From intersection of I-40 and US 17 (see Map)
    1. Continue south on I-40 as it becomes College Road past Market Street

• Directions to Hampstead
  1. From Wilmington, travel north on US 17 (aka. Market St) for about 15 miles
  2. From SE-bound I-40, take exit 408 east on SR 210 to US 17 in Hampstead
  3. From Jacksonville, NC, travel south on US 17 for about 30 miles
  4. A Food Lion supermarket sits at the intersection of US 17 and SR 210
  
  
• Directions from Hampstead to Site (see Map)
  1. In general, follow the “HALO” signs to balloon launch site
  2. Travel north on US 17 past the next major intersection (Country Club Drive)
  3. Continue north on US 17 past Topsail High School on the left
  4. The site is on US 17 on the right less than a mile north of the High School
     (Note: This is the opposite side of the road from what was previously reported.)
  5. A cemetary is on the right, just before the site
  6. The site is a grass field 300 feet across and 1 mile in depth
  7. The entrance to the site is a short gravel driveway between a line of trees
  
  
• Parking at the HALO Balloon Launch Site
  1. The field will be divided into areas using "fences" of warning tape
  2. HALO Team members should part on the right side of the field
  3. Visitors and members of press should part on the left side of the field
  4. For your safety, please obey the instructions of HALO Security personnel
